Election thoughts...

Hello all, this is Darren. I haven't posted here for months. However, I feel the need to "vent" a little about this election. What better place to do it than on a blog where the whole world can see it.

Here's my two cents on this whole election: Obama being our elected President isn't going to make the world end! Yes, there are certain key issues that I feel Obama has very little knowledge about (due to lack of experience). However, Obama isn't going to screw YOU. He isn's going to screw ME. Neither would have McCain if he were elected. Neither would have Joe Blow, had he been elected.

What happens to me and my personal life is 97% in my control, and 3% in the President's control. I'm serious about this! The last time I checked, I had complete agency to do whatever the heck I want to do, whenever the heck I want to do it, and however the heck I want to do it. There's a little something called "personal responsibility", and Obama isn't going to change that one bit. Yes, his decision making might slightly impact the economy and country as a whole. However, as I continue to live my life, this country will continue to give opportuinity to those who seek after it. Again, Obama isn't going to hinder me in this journey, nor is he going to motivate me to move forward. This is all a PERSONAL decision that if made out of careful judgement, I can achieve!

In other words, life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it.

Heather and I will be just fine with Obama as President as will you, as messed up as some of his ideas may be. Life will go on, and as far as I'm concerned, Obama will have such little impact on my life as a whole that quite frankly, I'm not concerned at all.

I'm proud to be an American.

I agree with you Darren. I'm not even worried about it. I'm more worried about the protests in California at the Temple's right now. I don't understand why our church is getting blamed for everything. There aren't enough Mormon's in California to make a huge difference on the vote. I'm confused about the whole thing. Why is it okay for them to be what they think we are? (bigots)

Well said, Darren. I really am a little fearful of some of Obama's leanings but I know everything will be alright. I think when the candidates get into office they realize things are not as easy as they think they are going to be.
Kari, you are right too. It amazes me that when you oppose someones beliefs, they have no tolerance for YOUR beliefs. Case in point that terrible bigoted ad against prop 8 and against the Mormons that viewed in Calif.

This post wins the award for most delete comments in a row.

Anyway, I hate to be a jerk, but I disagree with you. Granted, most likely Obama will be just fine, he'll have good points and bad points, but it does matter who is are president. People need to keep tabs on their leaders and hold them accountable. Carter made some really bonehead decisions that hurt Americans, as did Harding, Grant, etc. I agree that the world isn't going to end, but I don't agree that it doesn't matter who is President.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw in my two cents too. Yay me.

I think that I meant to say that when you have a different belief than someone. I didn't mean to say that I oppose their belief. I feel everyone has their free agency to follow their own beliefs and then so do I.

Knowing my husband, he doesnt care if anyone disagrees with his post....thats freedom of speech for everyone in fact I think he likes it lol ...but i sure know that he likes to know how it WOULD affect him like the other presidents like you said Carter affected people. I'm so happy you posted this! I think it's ridiculous how some people have reacted over this election as well as some of the passing propositions.

I personally am excited to get a new President and I honestly didn't care who got in because right now any change is good to me.

Christian, I agree with you, but I disagree too. Did you know that at Elijah's school parents were telling there kids that the country will end, Obama will kill their kids and he will take all our money away from us? Now, it does matter who is President, but no man would get away with THAT!

Carter caused some problems, but then Republican's ran the country for a significant chunk of the time since then. I think he is a socialist and I don't agree with Obama, but sometimes people need to see for themselves why it won't work. Instead of letting history do the teaching for them.

We will be fine and I'm not going to worry about it.

LOL! This has become the Olson Revolution in here. I didn't mean to cause this.

Christian- The sky is not falling, and we as Americans will be OK. If I keep waiting for Obama to change my life and the government too, then I will be way behind. The chance to get ahead is well within any of our reach as long as we aren't stupid. All I am saying is that everything will be OKAY now that Osama (oops, I mean Obama) is our elected President.

Wow... somehow this thread became attack Christian-time :D Job well done me!

Anyway, I'd like to point out that if you read my post I never once said Obama was going to ruin our life... nor did I endorse any candidate. My point was actually that you need to check WHOEVER is in office and not just dismiss what is going on in politics. Oh well...

Anyway, this thread turned out to be one of the most entertaining of my life. Well done Darren!

I agree with all of you. One, as a Californian, I am concerned with how the Prop 8 is effecting everyone. I think that the people protesting need to find someone to place blame on and they chose the Mormons because they know we won't do anything to them. Either that, or those that don't like us are using this as an excuse to hurt us. We just have to ignore them and treat it like the abortion protesters that are out during conference at SLC. Anyways, I used to feel that it didn't matter who was president, but I do worry now about the whole majority of congress and a liberal president. But I just try to have faith that if I do my part, Heavenly Father will watch out for us. But that doesn't mean that I'm not afraid about what the future has to hold for our nation and specifically for my state.

Becky~ I agree with you....I am really concerned with the fact that the president and the majority of the house and senate are from the same party. Hopefully they will be as fruitful as when the Republicans had the same situation. :)

Horray for Olsons and politics!

Well, my last name is now Olson, so I think that I can chime in, right? Especially if I am late..

I'm not sure what everyone else is saying, so maybe you guys are already saying everything I am about to say. But, while I certainly agree the the earth will not crash into the sun during an Obama administration, I don't think it gives people the right now to throw up their hands and say, "Oh, well, there is nothing that I can do, and what the president does doesn't affect me."

We have a representative democracy. That means that we send people to make our laws and administer our government because we can't all go and do it ourselves. That gives us the responsibility to keep track of everyone in office--whether we voted for them or not.

Sometimes I think we get lulled into a false sense of security thinking that it is other people's job to think about politics and other people's jobs to understand what the laws are, but, really, all of us as citizens have to be educated about what is going on.
